dSLR vs. point-and-shoot cameras.

often i hear somebody comparing between a dSLR with a compact point-and-shoot(P&S).
and often i hear some dudes saying how dSLR owns and p&s are lame.

there's no comparing because both cameras are on different levels and for different situations.
really! i mean, do you think a girl would want to stuff a chunky dSLR into her handbag?
let's imagine a situation.
so a woman(let's call her mary) has plans tonight. mary is having a get together dinner at a fancy restaurants with her girls. so she wore make-up, chose a gorgeous dress with a handbag to compliment it.
she stopped for a moment. she wants to take pictures with her friends but her handbag is not that big.
does she:
  1. stuff her big dSLR into the small handbag?
  2. instead of a handbag, bring a crumpler to fit her dSLR, speedlite and a couple of lens?
  3. decides just to bring a small p&s that can fit into her handbag?
for those who chose number 3, congrats! for those who chose 1 and 2, no comment-.-

dudes, stop comparing. a p&s are for those who wants to on vacation and capture some photos without the excess luggage. the quality may not match, but it's a sacrifice that person has made.
to simplify things, a p&s are for those who is not too keen of lugging around a heavy piece of equipment.
it still takes good pictures, it's just that a dslr offers higher quality and more details. that's all.

It's not unreasonable to demand more out of point and shoots. Paparazzi, for example, would die for a point and shoot with capability of a DSLR. Given a choice, most photographers would ditch those bulky cameras at any given time for something lighter and subtler.

With marketing gimmicks such as sweep panorama modes and bigger apertures (f/2.0 is the largest I've seen on PnS), camera manufacturers are bridging the gap between the two. Eventually the two of them will be almost same in terms of performance, except one thing: PnS will not have what made SLRs called SLRs.

something to think about before i go to sleep
